2020 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV

Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV Review

Let’s just start by saying that the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, is what is known as a Plugin Hybrid Electric Vehicle - Car.

It is perfect for the road conditions travelling in Ireland or commuting around Dublin.

It’s an electric car with a supplementary petrol engine which is a mixture between an EV (Electric Vehicle) and a HEV (Hybrid Electric Vehicle)

The 2020 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV is a major revamp from previous models of the PHEV. Mitsubishi is bringing a big increase in overall efficiency, plus there has been a €20% reduction in price compared with the previous one.

This current Outlander PHEV is a testament to Mitsubishi’s constant evolution, competent engineering and technological innovation.

This plugin hybrid electric vehicle has the best of both worlds. The Outlander PHEV has an electric motor and a backup petrol engine, therefore ensuring that;

  1. You Never have to worry about range anxiety, i.e. getting stuck in the middle of nowhere, with no way of recharging the battery to get back home. The Outlander PHEV has a range of over 600 kms.
  2. You will never be stuck queuing or looking for a charging point, as it has a standard three pin plug in charger that works with every traditional tree pin plug socket in Ireland and once there’s fuel in your car you can always continue driving.
  3. Unlike regular Hybrid vehicles which use their petrol engine to charge the battery and only drive in electric at low speeds up to 30 km per on average, the Outlander PHEV will (not can) drive up 130 km per hr in pure electric.
  4. You have a self-charging electric car which performs the same as all regular Hybrids with the option to charge the car at home or on the street giving you 45KM range in pure electric which is perfect for daily commutes to and from work and picking up the kids.
  5. It’s cheaper, more economical and better for the environment to charge your battery by plugging in compared to charging using the petrol engine, it only costs € 1 to charge at home and on street charging is free at present.

The cabin is spacious and depending on what level of speck you choose; it is also a truly luxurious travelling experience.

It's size and safety features also make this an ideal family car that is fun and comfortable for the whole family to travel in.

When you also include the additional traction and stability of 4-wheel drive that comes as standard in the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, it is easy to understand why this is the best-selling Plugin Hybrid Electric SUV in the world.

Mitsubishi have also included several other advanced Outlander PHEV safety technology features, for example, intelligent sensors that track your surroundings and warn you of danger to active driving assistance and solid passive protection.

The Outlander Plugin Hybrid Electric Vehicle delivers all around high levels of safety with Forward Collision Mitigation System (FCM), Adaptive Cruise Control System (ACC), Ultrasonic Mis-acceleration Mitigation System (UMS), Lane Departure Warning (LDW) Automatic High-Beam, Blind Spot Warning (BSW), Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA) and Multi Around Monitor System.

The all-new 2020 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV has as standard, a sophisticated Super-All Wheel Control (S-AWC) Twin Motor 4WD system that adjusts to changing road conditions and terrain, prioritising handling, efficiency and performance.

The 2020 PHEV has additional driving modes including a Sport mode and Snow mode for more grunt or traction. This latest Outlander PHEV model delivers lowered CO2 emissions levels, with 40 g/km and excellent fuel economy of 1.8 l/100km and a zero-emission range of 54 km.

The above points make it the most practical and safest of Plug in Hybrids (PHEV) on the Irish market today.

It is safe to say that the Outlander PHEV is the Mitsubishi Technology flagship, as the sales success of this electric car demonstrates the scale of consumer demand for electrified vehicles as the car industry undergoes a serious technology overhaul.

When you take a test drive in the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, it is so easy to see why this stunning SUV has won so many awards and accolades over the last six years.

The first thing you will notice is the wonderful feeling of comfort from the driving seat.

Everything is within easy reach in the surrounding cockpit, and has an excellent feeling of quality and style.

When travelling with rear passengers, space is not an issue, with an extremely generous amount of legroom directly allocated for rear passengers, therefore alleviating any feeling of claustrophobia that some passengers can feel when travelling long distances.

Head room is also not an issue with the Mitsubishi Outlander. Because of the traditional boxy shape of an SUV, even the middle rear seat travelling passenger will feel relaxed and comfortable with ample leg room to stretch out and totally relax.

The rear boot space has a massive 463 litres capacity, which will easily suit all of you and your family’s luggage carrying needs, and when you consider that the rear seats are split folding, this opens the rear boot space to massive carrying potential.

The Outlander PHEV is also equipped with a tailgate that is wide opening which makes any luggage easy to load into position.

The underfloor storage compartment is perfect for all of your charging cables and any other small items that you may wish to carry around with you.

Another very important noteworthy piece of information, is the Road tax.

The Road Tax for this electric car, is just €170 per year.

When you factor in the competition for the SUV space here in Ireland, that makes this electric vehicle the cheapest to tax on the island of Ireland.

Also, importantly, the entry-level price applies after €7,500 has been deducted as a VRT rebate (€2,500) and €5,000 SEAI grant. The SEAI grant is €3,800 for business.

For anyone that might suffer from potential travel sickness, the beauty of the Mitsubishi Outlander when in electric mode, is that there is a unique architecture consisting of a front electric motor, a rear electric motor and no gearbox. It is simply ultra-smooth to drive.

So, let’s talk about the charging of the Outlander PHEV, as it is a Plugin Hybrid Electric Vehicle.

The first issue that people worry about is where can I charge it, as it is an electric car?

Well, we know that nearly 90% of electric car charging is done at home, so how does Mitsubishi solve this?

Several ways actually:

Mitsubishi Electric Vehicle Home Charging

Connect the Outlander PHEV directly to any standard 3 pin wall sockets with the included charge cable to allow home battery charging. This is a 10amp 240v 5m charging cable which will take approximately 5 hours to charge.

A home charge point can be installed in your home specifically to charge your Outlander PHEV. This home charge point then allows you to use the orange Mode 3 AC 230V 16A cable which is supplied as standard with the Outlander PHEV – taking approximately 4 hours to charge. The SEAI provides a Public Charging grant of €600 towards the purchase of a home charge point. you can apply for this grant here

There are over 1100 public charge point sites across Ireland and growing, which allows the Outlander PHEV to slow charge via the Orange Mode 3 16A cable. Many of these sites also have the ability to fast charge the PHEV using a CHAdeMO DC charger. These fast chargers can charge the PHEV to 80% in approximately 25 minutes. A map of charge points can be viewed here. To access these public charge points you will need to register for public charging. Details of which can be found here

Mitsubishi Regenerative Braking

The Outlander PHEV uses an advanced regenerative braking system which allows the SUV to reclaim energy from itself during deceleration and braking. Regenerative braking level selectors are located on the steering wheel. The convenient regenerative braking level selector lets you easily adjust regenerative braking strength to any of six settings.

Control over Outlander PHEV battery usage is at your command using the integrated SAVE CHRG button. Select SAVE before EV driving to maintain the battery level for a later stage of your journey. Or choose CHRG to charge the battery via engine while driving. Using the charge feature will lead to a slightly increased fuel consumption.

Another amazing benefit of this electric car is that, the onboard computer of the Outlander is designed to constantly look for opportunities when driving to efficiently use the battery and motor in unison by switching between the two, therefore ensuring that the car is always at maximum fuel efficiency, either on battery or petrol.

This means that the engine is always performing at it's best, plus by using the allocated dash mounted paddles, you can also set aside a proportion of the battery reserve for use in urban driving which cuts back on petrol use, too.

Outlander PHEV Trim Levels and Equipment

The Outlander PHEV comes as a three variant trim or spec level car.

These are the, Intense, InStyle and the top end S-edition.

The pricing starts at just under €40,000 for the Intense when you consider the Government grants which are currently available, this actually makes it cheaper than the entry level diesel equivalent.

It’s also very nicely equipped from the ground up with features like dual zone automatic climate control, cruise control, a touchscreen multimedia display with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a reversing camera all as standard. It also gets 18-inch alloy wheels, roof rails and automatic lights and wipers.

The mid-spec InStyle model adds some luxurious quilted leather upholstery, electrically adjustable heated seats, an around view parking monitor, LED headlights and additional safety features like lane departure warning and automatic cruise control.

At the top of the range is the S-edition which starts at €47,500 and gets some exterior and interior styling upgrades, a sunroof, power tailgate and nine speaker surround sound system.

Mitsubishi Warranty

There is not much that we can say about the warranty that Mitsubishi offer with all of their cars.

The warranty for the Outlander PHEV is as comprehensive as a warranty can get, with an eight year/150,000km warranty.
